In general, kittens are very robust and are hardly ever seriously ill. However, they can sometimes suffer from vomiting and diarrhoea. Such instances can have a variety of different causes one of which could be the food they eat. To minimise the risk of this, you should only feed food that’s good for them, making sure you feed small meals at regular intervals rather than letting your kittens gorge on a large meal.

Scraps from the table should not be given to a kitten, as he can’t digest everything we eat: spices can upset his tummy and the lack of specific nutrition can cause him serious harm. It’s much better to feed your kitten food that’s been specially prepared for his needs.

A kitten should not be given uncooked fish or meat to eat, because it can contain diseases such as salmonella or the virus leading to the deadly Auieszkvan illness. Likewise, bones (raw or cooked) should never be fed, as they can become stuck in the cats throat. Feeding your kitten a healthy, balanced diet, rich in essential proteins, minerals and vitamins should ensure good health. However, should your kitten vomit more than once, or suffer from diarrhoea, you must take him to the vet immediately.
